The Madara Rider (Horseman) is a bas-relief dating back to the early middle ages and the only one of its kind in Europe. The sculptor carved the rock relief known as the Madara Horseman in the early 8 century, creating a majestic horse and a rider 23 m above ground level on an almost vertical cliff.

The horseman is thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet. A dog runs after the horse. This incredible rock carving is a wonderful sample of the middle age art in Bulgaria. The Horseman of Madara is a symbol of the majesty of the Bulgarian state while under the reign of the different khans.
